MANG comes from the word “Ta-Mang”, where ‘Ta’ means horse and ‘Mang’ means riders. MANG DOCHAA uses Syama usually woven and worn by women in Tamang indigneous communities.

Description

MANG DOCHAA features Shyama fabric, a piece of textile used in the traditional attire of women in the Tamang indigenous community. The word “Mang” is derived from Ta-mang where “Ta” means “horse” and “Mang” means “rider or trader”. Tamang are originally Tibetan horse traders who are popular as inhabitants of Nepali hills. They are native to the hilly region, north of Kathmandu Valley and are believed to have settled several hundred years ago.

Renowned for its deep colors and striped patterns, the treasured textile holds deep cultural significance. Every odd year, daughters learn the art of Shyama weaving, guided by the wisdom of a Lama and the stories of a Tamba, a traditional historian/ oral narrator in Tamang society. This practice symbolizes a passage into womanhood, intertwining tradition with personal growth.
